Art Formes was proud to present an exhibition of contemporary South African ceramics at RMB Latitudes Art Fair in Johannesburg (24th – 26th May 2024), which has become an emerging force within the contemporary African art scene. In merely its second year, RMB Latitudes Art Fair has swiftly consolidated its position as a pivotal event that celebrates the rich tapestry of African art with an emphasis on artist-centric curation and thought-provoking exhibition spaces spanning both indoor and outdoor venues. It was apparent that this year RMB Latitudes Art Fair was intended to engage a more profound sense of three-dimensionality. The emphasis on sculpture was unmistakable, with a plethora of sculptural works thoughtfully dispersed across the expansive Shepstone Gardens venue alongside the nonuniform nature of the exhibition spaces themselves that encouraged greater and more refined curatorial awareness. Galleries and artists showcased their works in a manner that harmonised with the unique character of each venue, from the luminous glass chapel and the grand marble-floored mezzanine to the distinctive circular pavilions. Art Formes enthusiastically welcomes these innovative developments in the South African art landscape, as we profoundly resonate with this mission to showcase and celebrate South African sculptural excellence. A similarly noteworthy observation was the encouraging number of younger visitors to the fair which signals a growing interest in the evolving and expanding market in South Africa. This sentiment was fostered by the numerous talks, walkabouts and discussions hosted by Latitudes that demonstrated the fair’s fervent desire to harness the engagement of these newer collectors. Art Formes similarly seeks to encourage these emerging collectors and inspire contemporary artists through the unravelling narrative of a story. Art Formes believes in slowing down the pace at which art is experienced, instead engaging with the literature and the artist’s own story that is the backbone of their works and practice. We were delighted to showcase new bodies of work by ceramic artists Hennie Meyer, Siyabonga Fani and Jabulile Nala.
